Course Description

Risk is present in everything we do. This sounds scary, but in fact, risk is good! Risk is what makes life worth living. If we always knew exactly what was going to happen, life would be very boring.

Risk management gets a bad name mainly due to over-the-top risk responses, particularly to health and safety risks. We are all familiar with ridiculous examples such as the bag of nuts that contains a warning ‘may contain traces of nuts’!

It should be stated very clearly that risk management does not seek to eliminate all risks, but rather seeks to understand the risks we face, and behave appropriately.

Effective risk management should improve our ability to achieve our objectives, and should do so in a cost-effective way. Rather than hiding the risks we face, if we can demonstrate that we manage risks effectively, this should improve stakeholder confidence.

The M_o_R guide is one of a series of best practice guides sponsored by the UK Cabinet Office. It provides a generic framework for the management of risk across all parts of an organization, whether at strategic, programme, project or operational level, and takes account of the fact that risks may be positive (opportunity) as well as negative (threat).

The guidance starts with set of principles, which are the essential elements that must be addressed for risk management to be effective. This is followed by guidance on how to create your organization’s unique approach to addressing the principles, the processes you will need, techniques which will help with these processes, and advice on the effective embedding of risk management at every level in your organization.

M_o_R training is provided at foundation and practitioner level. The foundation qualification demonstrates that the candidate is conversant with the various elements of risk management, and could act as an informed member of any risk management team. The practitioner qualification extends this skill to a level where the qualified candidate would be able to operate on his/her own initiative to apply and tailor M_o_R appropriately in a reasonably simple situation, and with growing experience should be able to apply the principles to increasing complex situations.

Course Objectives:

The purpose of the Practitioner level is to confirm whether the candidate has achieved sufficient understanding of how to apply and tailor M_o_R in a scenario situation.

  • Objective testing
  • 4 questions per paper, 20 marks available per question
  • 40 marks required to pass (out of 80 available) – 50%
  • Three hours duration
  • Candidates may make use of the Management of Risk: Guidance for Practitioners (the Management of Risk ‘guide’), published by TSO, together with the APMG guidance document ABC Guide Part A Example Techniques. No material other than the Question Booklet, the Scenario Booklet, the Answer Booklet and the two guides is to be used.
